(MOORESVILLE) - A student’s plans to ignite a bomb at Mooresville High were thwarted by school officials and police last week. The student was arrested Friday.
Police arrested 18-year-old Jahnathan M. Dooley on two felony charges of possession of a destructive device and two felony counts of intimidation.
Parents of Mooresville High School students were sent an email on Friday informing them of the arrest.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed Friday by Mooresville Patrolman Jeff Cook on Wednesday, Dooley allegedly told a counselor at the school "he was going to blow the school up."
The counselor had been talking with Dooley because he had been "kicked out" of school two weeks earlier as a result of a sexual advance he made toward another student. Dooley allegedly told her he was not allowed to stay home alone. He told the counselor that on Tuesday, his father had dropped him off at the Whiteland Public Library.
The counselor told police Dooley was unhappy with being kicked out of school and "he was going to blow it up."
Dooley allegedly told the counselor that while he was at the library, he researched how to make pipe bombs and he had found the place to put them. That place, he told the counselor, "was near the four brick pillars at the front entrance where all the kids congregate between classes."
Police say Dooley allegedly told the same story to the assistant principal. In addition, he allegedly admitted to having a World War II sniper rifle in layaway at a local store.
Cook after talking to Dooley took the teen to his home on Pony Express Trail and left him with his mother.
On Thursday, Mooresville Police Detective Chad Richhart met with Dooley and his parents. Dooley allegedly told Richhart "he gets crazy thoughts when he gets mad." Dooley told the officer he was still upset over being kicked out of school for touching a girl.
Dooley told the detective he "did know how to make pipe bombs and he had made other bombs as stump removers" saying he puts the mixture in a cardboard cylinder and "ignites it with a match."
Dooley's parents told police they supervised the teen when he made that mild explosive.
Dooley then told the detective where he would put the bombs. When asked why those locations, Dolley says it was "because they are structural support and support the second floor."
He also told police about the rifle he had in layaway.
Police say Dooley was "excited" about his plans and knew the "correct ratio (of chemicals) for the best result."
During a search of the teen's home police found chemicals, a fuse and five "molotov cocktails" filled with motor oil and gas.
