State Parks Chief Of Interpretation Earns National Honor

Last updated on Wednesday, November 25, 2015

(UNDATED) - The chief of interpretation for Indiana State Parks has earned the National Association for Interpretation (NAI) Master Interpretive Manager Award for 2015.

Vicki Basman was honored at NAI's national workshop on Nov. 13 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Interpreters, also called interpretive naturalists, explain the natural, cultural and historical resources of a park to its visitors through educational and recreational programs. Interpreters are responsible for making sure visitors have a meaningful experience. They answer questions, guide hikes, lead educational programs, host craft workshops, teach outdoor skills and more.

Basman started her career in 1992 as a seasonal interpreter at McCormick's Creek State Park in Spencer. She now oversees interpretive services at all 32 Indiana State Park properties. The program involves 23 full-time staff and 60 to 70 seasonal workers.

The Master Interpretive Manager Award is presented to an NAI member who has worked for a minimum of five years in the profession and whose current duties are at least 60 percent supervisory or administrative.

Recipients demonstrate a mastery of interpretive techniques, site and staff management and a respected ability to pass these skills to others. The awards committee looks for a well-rounded and talented recipient for this award. Basman was one of two recipients for this year's award.

NAI described Basman's commitment to interpretation as "unwavering" and credited her ability to build partnerships and mentor new interpretive professionals.

Basman also was awarded NAI's Region 4's Meritorious Service Award in 2002.

The NAI is a not-for-profit association for professionals in the interpretation of natural and cultural heritage resources in settings such as parks, zoos, museums, nature centers, aquaria, botanical gardens and historical sites.
