Lower Gas Prices, More Holiday Travelers Expected

Last updated on Tuesday, November 24, 2015

(UNDATED) - Thanks to a stronger economy and lower gas prices, more holiday travelers are expected to hit the road to Grandma’s house within the next few days.

AAA says that nearly 47 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home over Thanksgiving Day Weekend this year, the most since 2007 and a 0.6 percent increase over last year. About 90 percent of those travelers will be driving.

And they'll be paying less at the pump, too. AAA says the average retail price for gasoline is now $2.15 per gallon, 74 cents cheaper than the same time last year.

The budget-friendly news comes after the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) announced last month that heating costs this winter would be the lowest we've seen in years because of lower fuel prices driven by the record quantities of oil and natural gas flowing out of U.S. shale formations.
