(PORTLAND) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a hunting accident in which a 15-year-old male was shot by a 16-year-old male Tuesday afternoon.
At 4:32 p.m., the Jay County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call informing them of a hunting accident in the 1600 block of North 600 East Road in Portland. A juvenile had been shot in the leg.
According to conservation officers, the two boys were deer hunting together and decided to split up and push the woods. While walking through the woods a deer jumped up and ran in between the two hunters. The 16 year old took a shot at the running deer.
The bullet traveled approximately 75 yards through the woods and struck the younger boy in his left leg near his knee. The injured teen was taken to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. His injuries are not life-threatening.
Both teens were wearing hunter orange, however the shooter told police he did not see the other boy at the time he fired the shot. Both were licensed hunters who had completed hunter education classes.
Conservation officers remind hunters to always identify what is beyond your target before firing a shot, and to never shoot unless you have a safe backstop.
Assisting at the scene were deputies from the Jay County Sheriff's Office, Jay County Ems, and Salamonia Fire Department.
