INDOT Announces Designation Of 3 U.S. Bicycle Routes

Last updated on Friday, November 6, 2015

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Department of Transportation three U.S. Bicycle Routes have been approved for the state.

U.S. Bicycle Routes are officially numbered bicycle routes for experienced long-distance bicycle riders, generally considered "touring cyclists," who are comfortable riding on roads without any special treatments for bicyclists. This group also includes utilitarian and recreational riders who are confident enough to ride on busy roadways and navigate in traffic.

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials approved the routes totaling 610 miles last month. They run from near Terre Haute to Richmond, from LaPorte County to Jeffersonville, and from Hammond to Michigan City.

Bicycle Indiana Executive Director Nancy Tibbett says the designation puts Indiana at the crossroads of a budding network of national bicycle touring routes.
