Exploding Cans Cause Of 'Shots Fired' Call In Evansville Neighborhood

Last updated on Friday, November 6, 2015

(EVANSVILLE) - People in one Evansville neighborhood called 911 after hearing what they thought was gunshots.

WFIE reports, it turns out, it was something else.

In one hour, Evansville police received four different calls reporting shots fired within 4 to 5 blocks of the 300 block of East Missouri Street.

Just before 4 a.m., officers found the source of the problem. Police tell us a man was burning canned goods in a fire pit and when they overheated, they popped, making a sound similar to gun shots.

A can even flew into a neighbors yard.

Police said this incident had a number of people concerned so we wanted to explain what happened.
