(INDIANAPOLIS) - Eli Lilly announced plans to expand its global research and development headquarters in Indianapolis Monday morning.

The new $70 million building will add 130,000 square feet to the existing Lilly complex. The new building will feature laboratories and open meeting spaces.

"We are excited to grow our presence in Indianapolis, which is home to our largest global R&D facility and where our research efforts began," Jan Lundberg, Ph.D., the Executive Vice President of Science and Technology and President of Lilly Research Laboratories, said in a news release. "Evolving our laboratories will position Lilly and its Indianapolis-based scientists to more efficiently discover and develop new treatments that will make life better."

Eli Lilly said it plans to complete the building in 2017. The new building will enable chemists and engineers to collaborate.

"Ultimately, innovation is often tied to where and how we work together, so we wanted to create an environment that could unlock this potential," Bret Huff, Vice President of Small Molecule Design and Development, said in the release. "We believe this expansion will allow for greater collaboration among Lilly's small molecule research experts, which will help to further accelerate the development of new medicines within the company's core therapeutic areas."

The company said the laboratories in the new building will be flexible, so they can adapt as research and technology changes. The laboratory will focus its efforts on small molecules, or treatments typically taken orally.

This is Eli Lilly's fourth R&D expansion this year. It has already announced expansion plans in Massachusetts, San Diego and New York City.
