Terre Haute Woman Dies From Injuries Sustained In I-70 Crash

Last updated on Thursday, October 8, 2015

(VIGO CO.) - A West Terre Haute woman died from injuries she sustained in a crash Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 70.

87-year-old Emily L. Herrington was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after the accident.

According to an Indiana State Police report, at 1:40 p.m. State Police and Terre Haute Fire Department personnel responded to a two vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near the 9 ½ mile marker.

According to police Herrington, who was driving a 2000 Buick westbound on I-70 and for an unknown reason, traveled through a paved crossover, used by emergency vehicles, and into the eastbound lanes.

Herrington's car was then struck broadside on the passenger side by a 2013 International dump truck, driven by 59-year-old Jerald L. Jones of Rockville, IN.

The Buick came to rest in the median.

Herrington was extricated from the vehicle by Terre Haute Fire Department personnel and airlifted to an unknown Indianapolis hospital by Lifeline air ambulance.

Herrington appeared to have critical and life threatening internal injuries.

Jones complained of neck pain, but refused transportation to an area hospital.

The dump truck was owned by John Hall Trucking of Plainfield, Indiana and was loaded with construction aggregate.

Witnesses reported the Herrington vehicle appeared to be traveling faster than the normal flow of traffic prior to the crash. Investigators believe Herrington crossed through the crossover out of control and was not making a U-turn at the time of the crash.

I-70 eastbound was down to one-lane for approximately one hour during crash investigation and clean-up.

The crash was investigated by ISP Master Trooper Jason Schoffstall. Assisting were Master Troopers Chip McKee, Ty Lightle, and Matt Ames, Terre Haute Fire Department, Edington's Wrecker Service, and McDonald's Towing.
