Porter County To Purchase 137 Acres For Bird Sanctuary

Last updated on Tuesday, October 13, 2015

(VALPARAISO) - Porter County is about to make final the purchase of a 137-acre site that will be restored as a sanctuary for migratory birds.

The Times reports that the site is also being preserved to protect the water in the coastal area of Lake Michigan.

Porter County Park Superintendent Walter Lenckos says that land will be bought with $451,000 from the Coastal Estuarine Conservation Land Program, $245,000 from the Bicentennial Nature Trust and $196,000 from The Conservation Fund.

He says as a condition of the funding, the land must be preserved and not be turned into things like baseball fields and playgrounds.

The sale is expected to be made final by the end of the month.
