(UNION CO.) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a hunting incident that left one man injured by a .22 caliber rifle early Friday afternoon near the Whitewater River in Union County.
James Hickman, 25, Milton, sustained a .22 caliber gunshot wound to his right leg.
At approximately 2 p.m., Indiana Conservation Officers were dispatched to Reid Hospital in Richmond, Indiana. Hickman informed Officers that he had been squirrel hunting near the Whitewater River, when he laid his .22 caliber rifle on the ground, where the firearm discharged, striking him in the right leg.
Hickman also informed Officers that he was unsure if his finger had touched the trigger, but he did confirm that the safety was on. He also added that the safety does not work all of the time.
Hickman told investigators that he then applied a tourniquet to his right leg and walked to his vehicle and later had his wife take him to Reid Hospital.
Indiana Conservation Officers want to remind citizens that a safety is a mechanical device that is always subject to failure and to keep firearms pointed in a safe direction at all times.
