Man Injured After Falling From Cliff At Charlestown State Park

Last updated on Wednesday, October 28, 2015

(CLARK CO.) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating after a Memphis man was injured while hiking at Charlestown State Park Monday afternoon.

At about 3:15 p.m., Michael Adams of Memphis was hiking with friends along Trail 6 at the State Park when he got too close to the edge while taking a photograph, lost his footing, and fell off of the 40-45 foot high cliff. His hiking partners then contacted 911 for assistance.

Indiana Conservation Officers as well as responders from the Clark County Sheriff's Department, Charlestown Fire Department, and New Chapel Volunteer Fire Department were on scene. Vertical Rescue gear was used to lower Adams down a steep breakdown slope over 200 feet.

Adams was flown to University of Louisville Hospital for treatment. His injuries included a broken ankle and compound fracture to his lower right leg, and broken jaw.

Indiana Conservation Officers urge everyone enjoying the outdoors to stay on marked trails. Although enticing, avoid hazards while taking photographs of wildlife and scenery, and leave trip location/times with someone in case an emergency occurs.
