Indiana Conservation Officers Rescue Injured Hiker In Clark State Forest

Last updated on Monday, October 12, 2015

(CLARK STATE FOREST) - Indiana Conservation Officers responded to a call of an injured hiker nearly a mile and a half into the Clark State Forest Saturday.

Officers rescued 20-year-old Jordan Rooney of Lebanon, Ohio. Rooney began suffering severe abdominal pain, and was incapacitated while hiking the Knobstone Trail late Friday night with a group of fellow hikers.

Indiana Conservation Officer Robert Brewington, who is also an emergency medical responder, located Rooney shortly before 4 p.m. and guided fellow officers and EMS personnel to the patient. They utilized ATVs and 4-wheel-drive vehicles, but were severely hampered due to the wooded terrain.

Once packaged onto a backboard, conservation officers and EMS personnel carried Rooney a half mile through dense woods, and then loaded her onto a utility ATV. She was later transported by ambulance to University of Louisville Hospital.

Multiple agencies, including the Clark County Sheriff's Department, Yellow Ambulance Service, and area fire departments assisted at the scene.

Indiana Conservation Officers encourage all hikers to be prepared when taking to the woods. In addition to a cell phone, necessary items should include a current map of the trails, compass, first aid kit, flashlight, and extra food and water.
