Muncie Man Faces Neglect Charges After Stealing Car, Crashing Into Creek With Children

Last updated on Tuesday, September 22, 2015

(MUNCIE) - A Muncie man is now facing child neglect charges after he stole a parked car and crashed it into a creek with children inside the vehicle.

On July 30, 27-year-old Brent South stole a car in the 2300 block of East Yale Avenue. A 13-year-old girl and an 11-month-old girl were in the car at the time that he stole it.

A short time later he crashed the car into a creek with the two children still inside the vehicle.

South tried to flee the scene, leaving the children behind in a vehicle that was submerged in water.

Police caught South, and he was arrested and charged with residential entry, auto theft, and driving with a controlled substance in his system.

Last week prosecutors added additional charges to the case, including two counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury, Level 5 felonies.

South's initial hearing is set for October 26 in Delaware Circuit Court 1.
