Lockdown Lifted At Indy Zoo After Cheetah Escapes

Last updated on Monday, September 7, 2015

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indianapolis Zoo issued a Code Red Sunday morning after a cheetah escaped from its exhibit—forcing visitors to seek shelter.

Zoo spokeswoman Judy Palermo said zoo staff members saw the cheetah lying in an area of landscaping between the cheetah exhibit and public space. It remains unclear how the cheetah was able to escape the exhibit.

The zoo safety team approached the cheetah and used a tranquilizer dart to subdue it. After being darted, the cheetah ran back to its exhibit.

The cheetah, named Pounce, is new to the zoo. Pounce and his brother, Zephyr, came to Indy from the San Diego Zoo.
