INDOT Crews Continue Work On I-65 Bridge

Last updated on Thursday, September 3, 2015

(LAFAYETTE) - Work is progressing well on the I-65 bridge over the Wildcat Creek, as motorists anxiously await its reopening.

INDOT Spokeswoman Debbie Calder says that contractors have completed installation of all 12 micro-piles and installed reinforcing steel and concrete forms for a transfer block. That block will transfer the weight of the bridge at the level of those micro-piles.

As of now the timetable for re-opening has not changed, officially, but work is moving well. What's left is to wait for some concrete to dry, jack up the bridge to its original height, and then install steel supports.

Calder says they maintain their mid-September re-opening estimate in the event that problems come up in the next few weeks.

Despite the trouble the bridge closure caused and the amount of time it took to diagnose the problem Calder says the whole process has been pretty smooth.

The bridge was closed down when construction workers noticed the bridge was moving as cars drove over it. The problem was caused by unrelated construction on the bridge, and is being solved by driving high strength micro-piles into the ground to reinforce the bridge.
