Former Principal Fired For Dating Teacher Takes Case To State Supreme Court

Last updated on Friday, September 18, 2015

(STATEHOUSE) - A former Westfield elementary school principal’s challenge to his firing has gone to the Indiana Supreme Court.

Jeffrey Hewitt lost his job over an admitted sexual relationship with a teacher. His attorney Jason Delk argues the Westfield-Washington Schools' contract for principals specifically incorporates the rules governing dismissal of teachers - and by law, those rules include a right to a hearing.

Even though Hewitt acknowledged the relationship, Delk argues that's not enough by itself to remove him for cause. He says the school district would have had to prove the relationship impaired his ability to lead the school.
