(HAMMOND) - The former mayor of Lake Station and his wife have asked for a delay in their second criminal trial and for a federal judge to recuse himself.
The Munster Times reports attorneys for Keith and Deborah Soderquist made the requests Monday in Hammond federal court. A federal jury September 11 convicted the Soderquists for improperly using food pantry and campaign funds for personal use.
The Soderquists last week asked for a retrial in that case because they say the judge fell asleep at times.
Separately, the Soderquists and their daughter Miranda Brakley are to go to trial in November.
Brakley is charged with stealing money from the city when she worked as a court clerk and the Soderquists are accused of helping her hide the crime. All three have pleaded not guilty.
