Elkhart Earmarks $150K To Cut Down 200 Trees

Last updated on Thursday, September 3, 2015

(ELKHART) - The Elkhart City Council has approved spending $150,000 to cut down 200 trees on city right of way.

The Elkhart Truth reports that a fierce storm in July downed trees and branches around the city. Removing the accumulated brush taxed city resources, prompting complaints from some City Council members that it wasn't being done quickly enough.

Mayor Dick Moore requested the funding, warning of the possibility of more downed trees if there's another devastating storm. He also said there was a backlog of diseased ash trees that need to be removed.

City forester Daniel Coy says tree removal could begin as early as this week. The 200 trees are to be downed by Dec. 31, with the stumps to be taken out by June 1 next year.
