(UNDATED) - Indiana leads the nation in the amount of pharmacy robberies so far in 2015, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency.
WTTV reports, CVS recently announced it installed new time delay safes at more than 150 Indianapolis area stores to discourage criminals due to that statistic.
"Controlled substance narcotic medications that are sought after by robbers, such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, will now be stored in time delay safes in every CVS/pharmacy location in the market," the company said in a statement.
Indianapolis is the only CVS market in the nation to get the safes, according to CVS spokesman Michael DeAngleis.
"Approximately 150 (stores) are using time delay safes to store controlled substance narcotics due to the rise in pharmacy robberies in the Indy market," he said.
Time delay safes electronically delay the amount of time it takes for an employees to be able to open the safe.
Employees have to enter a code, which then triggers a wait time before the safe is unlocked.
Shoppers at the CVS near downtown Indianapolis said knowing the company added the increased security measure gave them peace of mind.
"It makes you feel safer about where you are going to purchase things you actually need to get better," CVS shopper Kelly Sullivan said.
Tina Mayes, of Indianapolis, said she believes the news safes will deter criminals from attempting thefts.
"They are not going to be patient enough to (wait), so I think that's a good idea," Mayes said.
Walgreens said it installed the time delay safes at several Indiana locations last year, according to our partners at the Indianapolis Star.
