BMV Gave Fired Worker Access To Confidential Auto Records

Last updated on Monday, September 14, 2015

(INDIANAPOLIS) - State personnel records show three people fired by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles were later hired by a private contractor that ran an Indianapolis branch for the agency, giving them access to confidential auto records.

The records, obtained by The Indianapolis Star, indicates two of the employees were fired for being dishonest during an internal BMV fraud and security investigation, while the other was terminated for poor performance that "opened the door for fraudulent title transactions."

BMV spokesman Josh Gillespie says he couldn't say why the Express MVA employees were granted such access or who granted it, saying those decisions were made under previous BMV leadership. Gillespie says BMV Commissioner Kent Abernathy has asked for a review of former BMV employees who have access to its computer system.
