Shoplifting Suspect At Beech Grove Walmart Dies After Shooting Self

(BEECH GROVE) - A shoplifting suspect who led police on a chase Thursday and ended up shooting himself has died.

WTHR reports the incident started at the Walmart at 4650 S. Emerson Ave. in Beech Grove. Police were called to investigate a shoplifting complaint. Store security took two men to the loss prevention office after they were allegedly caught stealing. One of the men escaped and ran to the Egg Roll #1 restaurant nearby.

Police say the suspect, 42-year-old Gillace Monroe Samples shot himself in the bathroom of the restaurant. He was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. The other suspect, 42-year-old Johnny R. Maxey is being held by Beech Grove Police. He is charged with theft.

Police recovered a handgun from the restaurant bathroom. Samples had two outstanding warrants for his arrest. One for a parole violation and the other for a July 29 shooting in Indianapolis.
