(INDIANAPOLIS) - Jurors have ruled that a former suburban Indianapolis paramedic was discriminated against when she was fired for having Type 1 diabetes.
The Indianapolis Star reports that former Wayne Township Fire Department paramedic Kristine Rednour was awarded $223,500. She filed a discrimination lawsuit in February 2013 and jurors reached their decision in Indianapolis federal court on Friday.
Rednour was diagnosed with diabetes at age 12 and her lawsuit claims her dismissal violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. A federal complaint states that the fire department fired her and told her she never should have been hired.
Defense attorneys argued Rednour failed to prove that the fire department on the west side of Indianapolis violated federal law because she didn't request accommodations. Rednour testified she didn't need them.
