Indianapolis International Airport Named One Of Best In World

Last updated on Thursday, August 6, 2015

(INDIANAPOLIS) - If you’ve ever flown out of Indianapolis International Airport, you know it’s one of the best airports in the country.

The national recognition is piling up.

Indy's airport has been rated the best airport in North America for the fourth time in five years. And, if that's not enough, it will be inducted Wednesday into a special Roll of Excellence making it one of the top airports in the world, only behind the likes of an airport in India; Seoul, South Korea; and Mumbai.

There are many things that make the airport award-winning from the top-notch customer service to a high number of non-stop flights -- more than any other airport of its size.

But, there are also things at Indianapolis International Airport that passengers don't readily see inside the airport that give it a community focus, things like a solar farm. It's in its final construction phase.

When it's finished, the 87,000 panels will make it the largest solar farm at any airport in the world and capable of providing electricity to more than 3,000 homes.

Then, there are the bees. Earlier this year, the airport opened a "bee yard" in support of honeybee preservation.

"When good pollination happens, we see our fauna become robust and the whole thing that occurs through pollination--all of those fruits, the vegetables like your apples, squashes, it becomes an affordable crop because of pollinators like the honeybee," said Robert Thompson, the airport's beekeeping expert.

This community bee apiary is a partnership with White Lick Beekeepers Association and is open to the public to encourage others to learn and pursue beekeeping on their own.
