Last updated on Monday, August 24, 2015

(HENDRICKS CO.) - An 18-year-old who died after a June car crash was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Hendricks County Coroner released the toxicology report Sunday for 18-year-old Savannah Bettis, who died on her last day of high school at Ben Davis. Evidence shows the car had significant exhaust leaks, sending carbon monoxide into the vehicle while it was being driven. Bettis and her boyfriend, 20-year-old Jesse Hurt, were overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning, causing the crash off of Ronald Reagan Parkway.

Had Bettis not died from carbon monoxide, the injuries she suffered in the crash would have been fatal as well, according to the coroner. Hurt was injured as well, but survived.

Bettis' death was ruled an accident. Hurt will not face criminal charges.
