Baby Lemur Dies At Fort Wayne Children's Zoo From Bacterial Infection

Last updated on Friday, August 7, 2015

(FORT WAYNE) - A baby lemur at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo has died after being hospitalized with a bacterial infection.

Zoo spokeswoman Cheryl Piropato says the 7-week-old ring-tailed lemur named Zeus died Monday. She said the lemur was hospitalized over the weekend after keepers saw it was weaker than usual.

Piropato said an exam after the baby lemur's death found it had abnormalities in its internal organs that likely contributed to its death. Zeus' twin, Apollo, remains at the zoo along with four other lemurs.

Ring-tailed lemurs are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
