Two NFL Players Lose Fingers In Fireworks Accidents

Last updated on Friday, July 10, 2015

(UNDATED) - Two NFL players lost fingers in fireworks accidents over the July 4 weekend.

Multiple reports confirmed Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul's right index finger was amputated Wednesday.

ESPN analyst Adam Schefter stirred controversy on social media when he tweeted a photo of medical records confirming the amputation. Dozens of Twitter users accused Schefter and the network of violating HIPAA rules by releasing the information. ESPN has not said how the photos were obtained.

Even with the lost finger, Pierre-Paul's career might not be in jeopardy. The 26-year-old was designated with New York's franchise tag, which would have paid him $14.8 million if he had signed, but the team reportedly rescinded the offer, making Pierre-Paul an unrestricted free agent immediately.

Buccaneers cornerback C.J. Wilson's father told the Tampa Bay Times his son lost the index and middle finger on one of his hands in a fireworks accident. The 25-year-old was with family and friends when he suffered the injury.
