Some Lawmakers Unaware Of Cell Phone Ban Amendment

Last updated on Friday, July 17, 2015

(FORT WAYNE) - Young people in Indiana weren’t the only ones caught off guard by an amendment to a state law that banned the use of cell phones for all drivers under age 21.

Some state lawmakers say they didn't know the item was in a bill either. The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette reports that at least four legislators who voted for the bill regarding supervision of probationary drivers say they weren't aware that it would affect cell phone use.

State Rep. Dan Leonard of Huntington says he would've been hesitant to vote for the bill if he had been aware of the provision.

But state Rep. Ben Smaltz of Auburn says anyone who didn't understand the bill's intent didn't read it.

Before July 1, the state law only applied to teen drivers under 18.
