Man Accidently Shot In Legs And Feet

Last updated on Monday, July 27, 2015

(WILLOW SLOUGH FWA) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a shooting incident that occurred at Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area gun range Sunday afternoon.

The gunshot left 73-year-old Richard Rondelli, of Schererville, with injuries to his legs and feet.

According to officers, Rondelli was trap shooting with his step-son Todd Sobczak. Sobczak experienced a hang fire (a type of malfunction) with his shotgun while attempting to fire it from his hip. This malfunction and the improper muzzle control contributed to the shotgun discharging toward Rondelli.

Rondelli was struck in the legs and feet with #8 bird shot from approximately 8 feet away. He was transported to Riverside Hospital in Kankakee, Illinois and is in stable condition.

The incident appears to be unintentional and is still under investigation.

Responding agencies include Indiana Conservation Officers, Newton County Sheriff's Department, Morocco Police Department and Newton County Fire and EMS.
