(LOWELL) - Authorities say human remains found at the site of a proposed northwestern Indiana stone quarry may be up to about 2,000 years old.
State Department of Natural Resources spokesman Marty Benson says the remains found recently at the Singleton Stone Quarry site southeast of Lowell "are very old human remains."
The discovery of the remains and artifacts has halted construction at the 600-acre site where a company wants to dig a quarry to mine for a road construction aggregate.
Army Corps of Engineers senior project manager Paul Leffler tells The (Munster) Times the agency's investigation of the remains and the site's human artifacts will continue outside the area where the human remains were found.
He says construction of the quarry won't begin until that investigation is complete.
