(MUNCIE) - Officials say stormy weather and heavy rains this summer have dumped tons of eroded soil and debris into the White River, turning it muddy and brown.
The Muncie Sanitary District also has issued notices to inform the public about potential dangers with sewage in the river. The Muncie Star Press reports that the volume of the city's combined sewer overflow discharges reached 200 million gallons last month, compared to 35 million gallons in June 2014.
Indiana-American Water Co. officials say they've been adding more chemicals to the water to disinfect the river.
But water levels in the White River have been too high and conditions have been too cloudy for biologists with Muncie Sanitary District's Bureau of Water Quality to do much sampling.
