Last updated on Friday, July 10, 2015

(CROWN POINT) - A 25-year-old Hammond man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison after pleading guilty but mentally ill to the beating death of his 29-year-old neighbor.

The Munster Times reports Andrew Decrescenzo was sentenced in Lake County court Wednesday according to the terms of a plea agreement. Authorities say Decrescenzo admitted to beating Robert Swafford to death with an aluminum baseball bat on Oct. 20 and throwing it into a pond in Hammond.

Police say Hammond officers found Decrescenzo trying to burn his bloody clothes across the street from Swafford's home as they investigated his death.

The newspaper reports Decrescenzo has also admitted to beating a fellow inmate at the Lake County Jail, pleading guilty but mentally ill to battery resulting in serious bodily injury.
