Authorities Beef Up Heroin Overdose Intervention Efforts

Last updated on Wednesday, July 1, 2015

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Eskenazi Emergency Medical Physician Dan O’Donnell says Indianapolis EMS has administered heroin overdose antidote naloxone 475 times so far this year.

That's slightly less than this time last year.

However, O'Donnell says heroin and opiate overdoses continue to be a big problem. That's why Marion County authorities are beefing up their drug training efforts.

IMPD has teamed up with Overdose Lifeline to promote their Opiate and Heroin Education and Prevention Pilot Program. IMPD Deputy Chief Bryan Roach says it's all about training community leaders about drug issues and intervention strategies.

Roach says crime - including burglaries and larcenies - is often linked to drug abuse and mental health issues. He says they're focusing on kids and teaching them early about the dangers of drugs and drug addiction.
