(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis woman was arrested for child neglect after she left her two children with special needs home alone for nine hours.
Fox 59 reports, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police department were dispatched to the 4600 block of Kelvington Drive at around 2:40 a.m. for a child welfare check.
When they arrived, the officers knocked on the door.
At that point in time, a 5-year-old girl came to the window, and she told the officers that she was home alone with her 2-year-old brother.
According to the probable cause report, the girl let officers into the home and they immediately smelled "burnt marijuana." Officers found a "grinder commonly used to grind marijuana with 'shake' in the living room. They also found a hookah pipe containing marijuana.
The home was dirty; there was trash, food bags, dirty dishes, and mold on the kitchen walls. The entryway was covered with bed bugs, both dead and alive.
There was also no food available for the children.
The boy was soaked with urine.
The girl told police that her mother usually leaves the home when they go to bed to party with her friends.
Child Protective Services and the children's grandmother was notified. The grandmother was given custody of the children.
Police located the mother, Kiara Officer, 23, at Costco off of 86th Street and Vincennes Road. Officer told police she had left their children at 5:30 p.m. with a babysitter named "Cocoa," but she was not able to give out any additional information about Cocoa.
The 5-year-old girl told police that no one came to watch them.
Officer was arrested on two counts of neglect of a dependent, a level 6 felony.
