Three-Year-Old Dies After Falling Into Saint Joseph River From Pontoon Boat

Last updated on Monday, June 15, 2015

(OSCEOLA) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the possible drowning of a three year old in the Saint Joseph River.

Around 4 p.m. Saturday, Indiana Conservation Officers were called to the Saint Joseph River at Baugo Bay after a report that 3-year-old Bryson Washington of Mishawaka had fallen into the water and had not resurfaced.

Friends and family had been swimming from a pontoon boat. Bryson did have a lifejacket on earlier while swimming but had taken it off after he got back on the boat. Witnesses heard a splash from the back of the boat and could not locate the toddler. They called 911.

Penn Township Fire, Mishawaka Fire, Saint Joseph County Police, and Indiana Conservation Officers responded to the scene and recovered the 3-year-old about fifty minutes later in 20-feet of water.

Bryson Washington passed away at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka just before 6 p.m. Saturday..

Indiana Conservation Officers are still investigating the incident.

Indiana Conservation Officers cannot stress enough the importance of wearing a US Coast Guard Approved Personal Floatation Device when on or near the water.
