(GREENFIELD) - The Hancock County Prosecutor on Monday charged the parents of a Greenfield 1-year-old for her death.
The couple is in court Tuesday morning. The mother, Jessica Wagoner, said to reporters on the way in, "I didn't do it."
Matthew and Jessica Wagoner's daughter was found unconscious in the 500 block of North Wood Street around 9:30 a.m. Thursday. That's when a woman who recently moved in with the Wagoners called police saying the baby was not breathing and had turned blue.
WTHR reports, when police arrived, they found Jessica in an alley beside the home crying and Matthew inside the home performing CPR on the child, but she wasn't moving, according to court documents. Police saw what appeared to be a scrape on her forehead that had scabbed over, multiple bruises on her abdomen and side, and foam coming from her mouth and nose.
As soon as medics arrived, the baby was taken to the hospital, where she was later declared dead.
Matthew told investigators he had been watching the baby all day while Jessica worked, and she'd been fine the whole time. He had given her a bath that morning and even taken her out in a stroller an hour before 911 was called. He said problems didn't start until she fell off the bed and stopped breathing.
The woman who called 911 told detectives she had been feeling sick since she moved in five days earlier, complaining of chest congestion. She also felt the baby had been sick during that time, sleeping a lot and acting "groggy." She also said the babysitter's daughter dropped the victim on the sidewalk and the 1-year-old hit her head and elbow. She and the babysitter called Jessica immediately but Jessica said the baby was learning to walk and fell a lot. The woman and babysitter felt like the baby appeared to be fine, so she was never taken to the doctor for a checkup.
Investigators say the child died of multiple injuries that would not have happened in a fall off the bed.
Officers arrested Matthew and Jessica Wagoner Friday night, according to Greenfield Police Chief John Jester. Monday, both were formally charged with murder, neglect of a dependent resulting in death, and neglect of a dependent.
