(MUNCIE) - The grace period is over for people not in compliance with a new state law requiring owners of low-speed mopeds and scooters to register their vehicles.
Delaware County Prosecutor Jeffrey Arnold says police in the central Indiana county had given moped riders a grace period of several months before enforcing the law that took effect January 1.
But he tells The Star Press that officers have now "started writing tickets."
Arnold he doubts many moped owners are aware of the state's new requirements for low-speed scooters and mopeds.
The new law requires owners of mopeds or scooters with engines smaller than 50 cubic centimeters to have a registration, a license plate and an Indiana identification card. They also must pass a test identifying street signs.
