Beginning July 1, You Can Own A Sawed-Off Shotgun With Proper Permits

Last updated on Friday, June 19, 2015

(UNDATED) - Beginning July 1, a new law will go into effect making it legal to manufacture, sell or own a sawed-off shotgun in the Hoosier state.

This is also known as a short-barreled shotgun.

The law states, the shotgun must measure at least 26 inches in overall length and you must have the proper permits and register it accordingly with the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives which will cost around $200 and it will take about six to nine months for the paperwork and background check to be processed. The can be found at www.atf.gov/FILE/61626/DOWNLOADpaperwork .

It's currently a felony to own, sell or manufacture a sawed-off shotgun in Indiana.

If you violate that law in Indiana, then there's up to 10 years sentence enhancement that can be placed on a conviction. That can be enhanced in a sentence you would receive from a court, on a conviction.
