Last updated on Monday, June 22, 2015

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A 14-year-old boy, who was reported missing from his Illinois hometown earlier this month, caused a fatal head-on crash on the east side of Indianapolis Friday.

Police said the teen stole his grandmother's 2009 Ford SUV in Mason County, Illinois. Detectives said the boy was driving at a high rate of speed northbound on Post Road, likely ignoring a red light at the intersection of Post Road and I-70.

When officers arrived to the scene around 6:30 p.m., they found the SUV had crashed into a 2001 Dodge pick-up truck. The driver, identified as 53-year-old Terry Riggs, was extricated from his vehicle and transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition but later died of his injuries.

Two other vehicles sustained minor damage in the incident. Those drivers were not injured.

Authorities said the teen was arrested on several preliminary charges, but may face additional charges. The Marion County Prosecutor's office is reviewing the case and is preparing a formal charging decision.

The investigation is still on-going.

n preliminary criminal charges once investigators have completed their investigation.
