(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The names of six fallen Hoosier police officers are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial.
A candlelight vigil at the memorial honors 117 officers killed in the line of duty in the last year, including four from Indiana: Indy Metro Police officer Perry Renn, who was shot to death after answering a call about a gun-wielding man; Gary officer Jeffrey Westerfield, gunned down in his squad car a day after Renn's murder; Merrillville officer Nickolaus Schultz, shot to death while answering a call about an evicted tenant trying to move back into his condo; and Tipton County Sheriff's deputy Jake Calvin, who died last summer when he crashed his patrol car on the way to an accident scene.
The memorial wall will also belatedly add the names of Washington County Sheriff Clyde Nichols, who was gunned down as he left church in 1984, and LaPorte Officer Thomas Ciecka, who was hit by a car while directing traffic in 1961. His death the following year was linked to his injuries.
The vigil is one of two ceremonies this week. The families of fallen officers will pay their respects again Friday on the Capitol steps.
