Former House Speaker John Gregg Running For Governor

Last updated on Monday, May 4, 2015

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Former Indiana House Speaker John Gregg, a Democrat who narrowly lost the 2012 governor’s race to Republican Mike Pence, said Thursday he will run for governor again because he thinks Pence’s focus on social issues has given the state “a bad name.”

Gregg announced his candidacy in an email and video that set the tone for his campaign.

"Under Mike Pence, Indiana has been given a bad name," Gregg said in the announcement. "His sole focus seems to be on social issues and telling people how they should live their lives.

"That's not the business of a governor or any government."

Gregg says the focus of his campaign will be on supporting Indiana businesses.

"As you'll hear from me throughout this campaign, my focus will be on finding new and innovative ways to help attract, retain and support businesses that pay Hoosier workers living wages.

"I'll work with -- not against -- our elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction, teachers, administrators, parents and all other interested parties to improve our schools and open the doors of higher education to more Hoosiers.
"And, I'll focus on building up our infrastructure -- and not just our roads and bridges -- but our workforce, broadband capacity, renewable energy opportunities and health care systems so regardless of where you live in Indiana, every Hoosier will have the chance to succeed."

Gregg, a former President of Vincennes University, is a Knox County native who grew up and resides in the Sandborn area.
