Fire And Explosion Destroys Three Columbus Trash Trucks

Last updated on Thursday, May 14, 2015

(COLUMBUS) - A fire and explosion Monday afternoon at the Columbus City Garage caused more than $850,000 in damage to three city trash trucks.

Capt. Mike Wilson, spokesman for the fire department, said that firefighters were called to the garage on Kreutzer Drive at 5:03 p.m. after a trash packer truck was reported to be on fire.

Firefighters were on scene within four minutes and found that the fire had consumed the engine and operator compartments of two trucks. As the firefighters fought the fire, one of the fuel tanks on the burning trucks exploded, catching a third truck on fire.

Wilson said the cabs of all three trucks were destroyed. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
