Valparaiso Student Charged In False Hostage Threat

Last updated on Friday, April 24, 2015

(VALPARAISO) - A Valparaiso University student has been charged with two felonies related to an incident on campus Tuesday.

Michael Clemens of Chesterton faces felony-intimidation and felony-false reporting charges after he called police and told them he had taken hostages in the Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources.

Porter County Prosecutor Brian Gensel said Clemens got out of the County Jail on bond on Wednesday and will appear before a magistrate on April 29th for an initial court hearing.

In court documents, Clemens' cousin, a town of Porter police officer, described Clemens as "a recluse, extremely quiet and distant." He added that Clemens suffers from depression, and he did not feel these actions would be outside the realm of possibility for Clemens.
