Stage Collapses At Westfield High School

Last updated on Friday, April 24, 2015

(WESTFIELD) - The Westfield Fire Marshall is investigating after a stage collapse during a Westfield High School musical performance left more than a dozen students injured Thursday night.

Witnesses watching the production of "American Pie" told authorities that at first they thought the collapse was part of the choreography, until parents started rushing to the stage to help.

In all, just under two dozen students were injured and sent to local area hospitals, a female student was originally listed in critical condition with a head injury, but is doing better.

According to officials the stage was built in 1997, but has been replaced since that time.

Investigators intend to see if the age and condition as well as weight from the students contributed to the collapse.
