Last updated on Friday, April 3, 2015

(EVANSVILLE) - A 6-year-old girl is credited with saving her family from a fire at their Evansville home.

WFIE reports that the fire happened around 1:30 am Wednesday at the Westbrook mobile home park.

Madisyn Marshall woke up to go to the bathroom and started screaming when she smelled smoke. Then she went around knocking on doors trying to wake everyone up.

"Smoke came out of the bathroom and so I went around the house and knocking on doors but no one would wake up," she added. "I got scared so I had to knock on the doors more and Judy and Erika woke up and they grabbed my shirt and Mackenzie's shirt and yanked me outside."

All five kids inside the burning structure were able to get out safely.

The family is currently staying at a hotel.

Officials say the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
