Scott Co. HIV Cases Growing At A Slower Rate

Last updated on Wednesday, April 29, 2015

(SCOTT COUNTY) - The number of confirmed HIV cases continues to grow in Scott County, but at a much slower rate that it was last week.

Officials with the State Department of Health say that only two additional cases were confirmed since numbers were last reported on Friday putting the total up to 138 confirmed with five preliminary positives. Officials also continue to see more involvement with the needle exchange program and other services they are offering to help combat the outbreak.

While there is certainly plenty of work to be done Deputy Health Commissioner Jennifer Walthall says that, at least for this week, things appear to be looking up. She credits the combined work of volunteers, federal officials, and state health workers for making the efforts to comprehensive and effective.

There have now been roughly 65-hundred needles that have been brought in or brought back as part of the exchange program, and more than 7,000 clean ones sent out.

As far as legislation in the statehouse regarding statewide needle exchange efforts Walthall says State Health Officials are happy to have any tool in their arsenal that will help combat the spread of any disease.
