(UNDATED) - According to the National Weather Service, hail causes approximately $1 billion dollars in damage to crops and property each year. In 2013 there were over 5,400 major hail storms nationwide.
With severe weather on the horizon, preparing before a storm strikes is the best way to protect life and property.
Before:
Purchase a NOAA All Hazards Radio, or download the FLASH Weather Alerts App on your smartphone.
Close your drapes, blinds, or window shades to prevent potential injury from broken glass blowing inside.
Create a disaster safety kit for your family, with enough provisions to last at least 72 hours after the storm, in the event of power outages or flooded roadways.
During:
Stay inside until the storm has passed.
Stay away from skylights, windows and doors.
After:
When moving around outside, avoid any broken or downed branches or power lines.
Check the trees, shrubs, and plants around your house - if they are stripped of foliage, there is a possibility your roof is damaged. Dented patio covers, screens, or soft aluminum roof vents could also indicate roof damage.
Cover any broken windows and holes in your roof to prevent water intrusion following hail damage.
