Dog Breeder Now Owes More Than $70K in Fines

Last updated on Wednesday, April 22, 2015

(LAFAYETTE) - A northwestern Indiana border collie breeder now owes more than $70,000 after a judge determined he was ignoring an August court order limiting him to owning no more than three adult dogs.

The Tippecanoe County judge found Thurman "Randy" Sanders Jr. in contempt of court Monday. The judge said Sanders knew he was in violation of the order, and has shown a pattern of violating ordinances and court orders.

Sanders was ordered to pay an additional $21,050 in fines and attorney fees, on top of the $49,805 in fines and fees assessed last fall.

He admitted to having eight dogs when seven of them were rescued February 23 from a filthy, unheated barn on his property.

Another judge stripped Sanders of ownership of the seven dogs earlier this month.
