Attorneys May Use Insanity Defense In Slaying

Last updated on Monday, April 6, 2015

(PORTLAND) - Attorneys for an eastern Indiana man accused of fatally stabbing his wife will likely use an insanity defense when he stands trial.

The Star Press reports that 53-year-old Richard A. Straley's attorneys filed a notice this week in Jay Circuit Court indicating that they will likely use the insanity defense during his trial.

During a Friday court hearing, a judge agreed to have two mental health professionals examine Straley, who's being held without bond in the Jay County Jail.

The Portland man faces a murder charge in the March 18 stabbing death of his 58-year-old wife, Connie. After being mortally wounded, she staggered to a neighbor's apartment and collapsed and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
