WWII Live Hand Grenade Found At Columbus Senior Facility

Last updated on Thursday, March 5, 2015

(COLUMBUS) - Authorities have recovered an explosive belonging to a former resident of a senior community in Columbus.

Police were called to Four Seasons Retirement Center on Tuesday morning after a maintenance worker discovered a live hand grenade. The employee was cleaning out a cardboard box belonging to a World War II veteran who had recently died.

An officer from the Columbus Police Department Hazardous Devices Unit arrived at the scene and was able to secure the explosive.

Family members of the former resident told police he was injured during the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Sgt. Matt Harris says it's common for veterans to bring relics and souvenirs back from the battlefield.
