Indiana Has More Children With Parents In Jail Than Most States

Last updated on Tuesday, March 3, 2015

(UNDATED) - The Indiana Youth Institute’s new “Kids Count” report says Indiana has more children with parents who are, or have been, incarcerated than most states.

Indiana has the country's second highest rate of incarcerated parents. This phenomenon has a significant negative impact on Hoosier children. The report ranks Indiana behind Kentucky, Oklahoma, Ohio and Michigan who round out the top five.

Indiana Youth Institute President and CEO Bill Stanczykiewicz says drug activity, particularly the meth epidemic, may play a large role. He says the issue creates a large lack of stability in a child's life.
